It was a lifeline, slashing shopping bills while prices continued to rise and enabling people to put lots more fresh food and veg on the family menu.
The Zion Centre Bread and Butter volunteers got more than 18 tonnes of low-cost food to local families this winter, helping take the sting out of spiralling food price rises.
Their 10 volunteers packed 3,195 bags of shopping during December, January and February, with people from Hulme and the surrounding areas visiting the project more than 1000 times to pick up vital food supplies.
Anna Akhtar, Zion Centre volunteer lead says:
“Our Bread and Butter volunteers did a magnificent job throughout the cold winter months, getting hundreds of bags of shopping ready every week for hard-pressed families. It was a lifeline, slashing shopping bills while prices continued to rise and enabling people to put lots more fresh food and veg on the family menu. The icing on the cake is that it’s food that might otherwise go to waste.”
