Meet Mamoona Akhtar, PCN Coach with Be Well

“Big Life is amazing for flexibility and supporting work-life needs. As a first-time mum, everything feels new to me, and I felt so reassured when I needed time off to care for my unwell baby.”

Mamoona shared insights about her current role and how it’s evolved since she started with Big Life:

“I’m currently a PCN Coach with Be Well. A typical day involves empowering clients on their coaching journeys and building relationships with local GP practices and the community. There’s a lot of multidisciplinary work, so my days are never boring! Since joining Big Life, I’ve transitioned through three roles. Each role helped me discover my passions and added just the right amount of challenge.”

We asked Mamoona what she enjoys most about Big Life’s culture:

“There are many events and resources to support staff wellbeing, like wellbeing afternoons and the staff awards. We also have mental health support through the Employee Assistance Program.

I appreciate that I can share thoughts and suggestions on service improvements and that they’re genuinely considered – and even acted on if appropriate. Since returning from maternity leave to a new role, I’ve felt fully supported; no question is ever treated as silly.”

We also asked Mamoona how Big Life supports her personal and professional development:

“Big Life is really attentive to employee wellbeing, especially people from marginalised backgrounds. They highlight areas like pay gaps and actively work to improve them. I participated in a Career Development Program specifically for staff from minority ethnicities, which was invaluable for my personal and professional growth. This program helped me feel heard and supported my transition into a new role, with assistance in interview preparation and the application process.”

We then asked if Mamoona could share an instance when she saw Big Life’s values in action:

“There are several working groups within Big Life that create a safe space for employees to share their thoughts and experiences. What stands out to me is the support provided during difficult times, like recent riots and instances of antisemitism and Islamophobia. Management offered multiple check-ins, validating our feelings and providing a sense of security and solidarity.”

We asked Mamoona what motivates her to come to work each day. Here’s what she said:

“Knowing I’m making a difference in the community and supporting people who may not receive this help otherwise. I understand how my role fits into the wider picture of support Big Life provides.”

Finally, we asked Mamoona what advice she’d give to someone considering joining Big Life and what potential employees should know:

“Make the jump! Big Life is diverse and full of opportunities – you’re bound to find something that fits. The support here is incredible, from frontline workers to management. You’re listened to and appreciated, and if you ever feel otherwise, there are many ways to share your thoughts.”

Take a look at our current opportunities. Whether paid positions or specific volunteering roles, we regularly have opportunities across the group’s services.
