Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Lightbox Therapy

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a type of winter depression, which affects an estimated one million people in the UK every winter, in particular during December, January and February. In addition perhaps as many as ten million people are affected by ‘winter blues’ a mild form of SAD. The symptoms of SAD usually recur regularly each winter, starting between September & November and continuing until March/April. Lack of light causes SAD. Therefore, getting an extra daily does of light in the winter via light treatment/therapy works for 85% of people diagnosed with SAD. The following symptoms show the wide range of physical, mental and emotional changes that people with SAD may experience in winter:

  • Sleep problems
  • Lethargy
  • Overeating
  • Depression
  • Social Problems
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of libido
